Educational psychology consists of
two words psychology and education. Education psychology is a division of
applied psychology. It is composed of two words ‘education’ and ‘psychology’.
We have already understood that psychology is a positive science that studies
human behaviour and experience in their environment. Let us now find out what
is education.
Meaning of education
Education is the modification of
behaviour in a desirable channel. The word ‘education’ is derived by the Greek
word ‘educatum’ which means the ‘art of teaching’. Education is also considered
as an emergence or to bring up, to bring forth and lead out. Universal
dictionary of english language difines it, “Bringing up, training education.
(1) Discipline, development and training of mind, character and faculties, (2)
Instruction and training of the young, (3) Organized system of education in a
given state”/. It is a “phase of the social process that is fostered by society
for the purpose of filling its members for life in the group”.
Meaning of educational psychology
Davis (1943) has a made a correct
observation by saying ‘psychology has made a distinct contribution to education
through its analysis of pupil potentialities and differences. It has also
contributed directly to a knowledge of pupil, growth and maturation during the
school years”. Therefore educational psychology may be considered as the
psychology applied to educational problems. Some of the important definitions
